South Africa's Paralympic sprint star Oscar Pistorius has launched a bid to negotiate an out-of-court deal to pay damages to the parents of his lover whom he allegedly killed on Valentine's Day.
According to a report by CBS Sport, Lawyers for both Oscar Pistorius and the parents of Reeva Steenkamp have reportedly been discussing an out-of-court settlement of a civil lawsuit brought by the Steenkamps against Pistorius.
The lawsuit is separate from Pistorius' criminal trial, which is set to begin in March. The former Olympian was indicted Monday on charges of premeditated murder.
A South African newspaper reported that negotiations were ongoing, but lawyers for both sides offered few details due to the sensitive nature of the case.
The Steenkamps are seeking around $300,000 in damages due to the death of their daughter, and their lawyer admitted that recent talks have been "intense."
According to the report, Pistorius is looking to settle the civil trial before the criminal trial in an attempt to reduce the payout to Steenkamp's family.
Pistorius stands accused of murdering Steenkamp in his home in February. The sprinter claims he shot Steenkamp after mistakenly believing her to be an intruder.
"None of this should have happened," Steenkamp's mother told the paper. "We want justice. We want the person who did this to pay."
